THE BLUE OBELISK.

ALL THAT WE SEE. A SERIES CREATED DURING LOCKDOWN 2020

‘All that we see,’ is a suite of large-format digital paintings that reflect the touching points from everyday
and every night thoughts, our relationship with each other in the world around us.

Based in a dreamscape of reality, the series is comprised of imagined scenes with flurries of elements entering
as if scattered through dreams with dominating symbolism – but left in a ‘woke early’ state.

THE BLUE OBELISK is the underpinning element in this exciting work.

Symbolically the colourful bird rests upon this icon of creativity awakening the world to the beginning of the new day.

An obelisk is often looked at with phallic observations while the powerful force of the sodalite stone is associated with
positive energy, truth, inner peace and harmony.

Its beautiful colouration reflects that of the bird who is cheekily holding a pair of tantalising ripe cherries while
humorously sporting a tarboosh [Fez]. Other North African imaging contained in stylised palm decoration and shadows
across a cartouche of Morrocan tiles, while Tifinagh glyphs appear in the dust of the background.

The lone figure riding through the dreamscape can be seen as continuing an odyssey in which numerous opportunities
occur as either synchronous or random events.

ALL THAT WE SEE. A SERIES CREATED DURING LOCKDOWN 2020

‘All that we see,’ is a suite of large-format digital paintings that reflect the touching points from everyday

Based in a dreamscape of reality, the series is comprised of imagined scenes with flurries of elements entering

BIRD DREAM LOVERS reflects the pursuit of happiness through simple love but reminds us of the painful
complexities it can bring through time.

The visual vocabulary provides simple clues to playful lovers in search of the Baetylus represented in the
Emesa temple. But they can’t foresee the disrupted vase and withering shrub of deterioration.

However handsome bountiful beginnings are, with lush foliage representing adventures in different directions
and exotic locations, the symbolic memorial to Yves St Laurent in the Jardin Majorelle which he and his lifelong
partner Pierre Bergé cultivated, remind us of loss and remembrance.

STATION TO STATION takes us through the journey we all begin with our first breath.

When it fuels our lungs and pumps oxygen into the motor, engine room and control system which is our being.

The lifestyle we choose or one bestowed upon us, the venture through love and loss, sampling things from the
world around us, dealing with discord and disruption.

The visual vocabulary includes references to Ed Ruscha, the Judgement of Paris, Aphrodite
and the Trojan war, David Lynch and Claude Monet at Giverny.

NIGHT RIDE TO LOVERS ROCK.

NIGHT RIDE TO LOVERS ROCK is a vanitas work depicting the individual and circular need for
sexual fulfilment within our routine.

The ancient ‘Baetyl’ or Lovers Rock is a sacred stone that was kept by Aphrodite near her temple at Palaeopaphos.
Specifically, it was visited by those seeking the pleasures that come with heightened virility and desire.

After dark is one of the most frequent time-spaces for encounters and coital activities.

The horse riding characters provide an urgency of movement and imply ever-changing players within the
same life process. Also, a small but significant reminder included here shows the moon in
waning crescent phase reminding us of the rhythm in the passing of time and our own mortality.

Implying maybe, we must just get in the saddle and get on with it.

MULKOHA. (THE CUCKOO) finds us in the realm of opportunism.

Symbolic female representation often takes the form of a musical instrument, utilised here as an ornamental
Mariachi Guitar (owned by Frida Kahlo) and combined with a wooden painted model of a Mulkoha Bird (Cuckoo),
who recognises a favourable moment presented to it while safely, but riskily, hidden behind a prickly plant,
as a departing figure appears as disappearing from view.

The telephone is present in order to represent the triangulated communications which become increasingly
complex as scenarios develop, it is also a punctuating metaphor of the increasing passing of time and distance
between parties.

WELCOME TO LOVERS ROCK represents the search for harmony within relationships and consistency in life.

The blue seated nude female figure glances, in the style of an ancient Greek Aphrodite sculpture, towards the
distant symbolic ‘Baetyl‘ situated by the bathing pool. Perhaps the cleansing waters will bring a ‘welcome’
sense of clear thought.

The delivery truck is a metaphorical device which constantly brings opportunities for fulfilment, while the
figure on horseback can be seen as either a transient figure passing through the scene or arriving in a more
considered manner for a potential suitor.

MOTHER TONGUE.

Like Odysseus, we journey through life and encounter many fronds of opportunity or challenge unfurling before us.

Just as the symbolic central core of the plant dominating this vanitas painting, we are rooted in our belief,
spiritual or otherwise, that we will fulfil our tasks and arrive at our destination. Where ever that may be.

And, like Georgia O’Keeffe putting herself in an Adobe lifestyle distanced from society and enveloped by
the rugged environment, we are given small but constant reminders of the fragility of the world we are part of.

IMMORTAL WAVE. (MEXICAN)

IMMORTAL WAVE. (MEXICAN)

This timeless and simple gesture has become a symbol in everyday visual communication, including a much-used emoji.

👋🏿👋🏾👋🏽👋🏼👋🏻👋🏼👋🏽👋🏾👋🏿

Visual language crosses borders and continents easier than the written word carrying with it, of course, some cultural
variations which can be open to misinterpretation.

However, in this dreamscape, we are uncertain if the figure, which is based on a papier-mache Mexican model,
is waving (welcoming) to someone in front, or gesturing at the figure on a mule in the far distance behind.

The small Día de Muertos skeleton in the red sand to the right of the central figure might represent La Catrina,
the conch shell (sexual desire), and the reclining female figure above could be seen as either on a plinth or entering a grave.

These symbols also form four corners of an encircling device with a central figure, which can be expressing the
changing forces of birth, a fulfiled life journey, death and remembrance hidden within them.

Water could be interpreted as a new wave and life force arriving at the shore and the plant-form seen as bringing
new growth and energy.

SMALL MAN. BIG CAT.

In life, there are external forces beyond our control which will try to rule or overpower our being, especially in
love and relationships.

Here is a depiction of an individual being, travelling towards the ‘Baetylus’ or Sacred Stone symbolically revered
by Aphrodite and kept near the temple at Palaeopaphos, but we see a formidable obstacle between them.

However, in our dreamscape, we are unsure as to what we witness.

Three powerful symbolic forces – love, strength, courage – but a number of hidden scenarios.
